Jared Leto performs as Nirvana's Kurt Cobain (VIDEO)

(CBS) - Actor and musician Jared Leto has released a video in which he performs as grunge icon Kurt Cobain.

The video was apparently produced awhile ago, but it is now being shared on the 17th anniversary of Cobain's death.

Here's what Leto wrote about the timing:

I heard today (April 5) was the day Kurt passed away 17 years ago. Can't believe it's been that long. So grateful for his contribution and inspiration. Not sure I'd be doing this if it weren't for him. He gave us all permission to create no matter what our skill set and reminded me that dreams are possible. Thanks for that. This made me recall a short piece of film I shot when I heard they were making a film celebrating his life. I made it to explore the character and explore creative possibilities. I never sent it to the studio or to anyone but thought I'd share it now...

- Jared Leto

Cobain died on April 5th, 1994, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head at his Seattle, Wash., home.

His life and music were mourned around the world and his untimely death has been a topic of public fascination and debate.

Since their debut, Cobain's band Nirvana has sold over 25 million albums in the U.S. and over 50 million worldwide.
