James Franco to adapt William Faulkner's "The Sound and the Fury"
James Franco can't get enough of Nobel-prize winning author William Faulkner.
The Oscar-nominated actor recently starred in, co-wrote and directed an adaptation of Faulkner's acclaimed work, "As I Lay Dying," and now he has his sights set on another novel from the Mississippi-born author.
Franco told the Los Angeles Times on Monday that he plans to next adapt the classic, "The Sound and the Fury," with his "As I Lay Dying" and "This Is the End" castmate Danny McBride co-starring in the production. The "Oz The Great and Powerful" star says his brother Dave Franco and "Mad Men" star Jon Hamm are also attached to the project.
First published in 1929, "The Sound and the Fury" captures the decline of the American South (a common theme in Faulkner's works) as seen through the highly dysfunctional Compson family, a clan that makes the Bluths almost seem normal.
"The Sound and the Fury" was previously made into a 1959 film starring Oscar-winner Yul Brynner and directed by Martin Ritt. That film bore little resemblance to the actual novel, which many say is nearly impossible to adapt into a movie given the book's stream-of-consciousness narrative.
Looks like Franco has a challenge ahead of him.
