Iowa Stuns No. 10 Kansas

Iowa's long-range shooting helped the Hawkeyes snap the longest home winning streak in the nation.

Kent McCausland hit two 3-pointers in the final 1:40 as the Hawkeyes beat No. 10 Kansas 85-81 Tuesday night, ending the Jayhawks' home winning streak at 62 games.

"For crying out loud, this is the greatest win in the history of the Hawkeyes," McCausland said.

It was Kansas' first loss at Allen Fieldhouse since Feb. 20, 1994, when Missouri beat the Jayhawks 81-74.

"It's mind-boggling," Kansas center Eric Chenowith said. "The streak's always been in the back of our heads."

Forum: What's wrong with the Jayhawks?

McCausland, who led the Hawkeyes (6-1) with 15 points, hit four of his five 3-pointers in the second half. As a team, Iowa went 8-for-11 from 3-point range after the break, offsetting the Hawkeyes' season-high 31 turnovers and Kansas' 18 steals.

"You can sit there all night and ask what we did wrong," said Kansas coach Roy Williams, whose Jayhawks (5-2) lost for the second time in three games. "But somewhere, you have to give Iowa some credit. They're a good team, and they made the big plays."

Kansas did hurt itself at the line, however, making only 11 of 23 free throws compared to Iowa's 18-for-28. The Jayhawks didn't hit two in a row until 8:30 remained in the game.

"We gave them too many chances," guard Ryan Robertson said. "We opened the door for them by not making our free throws. They're a good team, but it shouldn't have gotten to that."

home winning streak was a school record, but it wasn't close to the NCAA mark of 129 set by Kentucky from 1943-55.

Chenowith hit a turnaround shot with 1:48 left to give Kansas a 76-74 lead. But MCausland hit a 3-pointer and Joey Range followed with a steal and jumper to put Iowa ahead for good, 79-76.

Robertson's 3-pointer with 16.6 seconds left cut Iowa's lead to 83-81, but the Hawkeyes broke Kansas' press for an uncontested layup by Ryan Luehrsmann with 8.4 seconds remaining.

Kansas' Kenny Gregory led all scorers with 20 points.

A 12-2 run, including three straight baskets by Nick Bradford, gave Kansas a 59-41 lead with 12:50 remaining. But the Jayhawks managed just two field goals in the next seven minutes, and Iowa went up 70-69 on Jacob Jaacks' two free throws with 5:14 left.

"It was pure, raw emotion," Iowa coach Tom Davis said of the comeback. "Battling from being behind the whole game makes it even more meaningful. The big thing was just hanging in there."

Gregory had 14 points and freshman Jeff Boschee had 11, including three 3-pointers, as the Jayhawks posted a 43-34 lead at halftime. The Jayhawks had 15 fast breaks against the Iowa press before the break, but also committed 10 turnovers.

Free-throw shooting helped keep the Hawkeyes close in the first half, despite 14 turnovers. They were 9-for-12 from the line before the break, compared to 1-for-4 for Kansas.

Jaacks scored 14 points, Dean Oliver had 13 and J.R. Koch had 12 for Iowa. Boschee finished with 15 points for Kansas, while Robertson added 12 and Chenowith had 10.

Kansas played without forward Lester Earl, who underwent knee surgery on Monday. He is expected to be out 10-14 days.
