Ill. woman, 61, charged with murdering six-month-old granddaughter, report says
(CBS) CHICAGO - Alfreda Giedrojc, a 61-year-old Illinois woman, is charged with first-degree murder in the death Sunday of her six-month-old granddaughter, reports CBS Chicago.
Police declined to say how the baby died, except to say she "suffered from a significant injury." However, CBS Chicago reports sources say Giedrojc allegedly hit the child in the head with a sledgehammer and then cut her throat.
The child was identified by the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force as Vivian Summers.
Police officers initially were called to Giedrojc's home in Oak Lawn around 10:45 a.m. Sunday after receiving a call about a person with a gun. While en route, police learned a baby had "suffered a significant injury," police said.
In a news release announcing the charges against Giedrojc, police said Vivian's father "had stepped out of the grandparents' house for a short time when this horrific event took place."
After police arrived at the home, Vivian was transported to a hospital in Oak Lawn and was pronounced dead shortly before 2 p.m. Sunday, reports the station.
Police said Vivian lived in Bolingbrook with her parents, but was visiting her grandparents when she was killed.
Giedrojc was due to appear in bond court Monday afternoon at the Bridgeview Courthouse.
