Huckabee Talks to Tax Plan Supporters
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Mike Huckabee cancelled his official visit, but then stopped by the "Fair Tax" rally before tonight's GOP debate anyway. Standing in the back of a red pickup truck owned by state campaign manager Chris Caldwell, he delivered a short speech to an enthusiastic crowd of about a hundred supporters.
"We are not simply part of a campaign, but a cause," said Huckabee. "One of the things I'm proud of is all of those of you who have supported the Fair Tax because quite frankly, you've given me the opportunity to tell America what's wrong with our current tax system and what could be right with it."
He said it was a "thrill" to have with him Rep. John Linder, R-Ga., the co-author of the "Fair Tax" book and leading sponsor of the Fair Tax bill in Congress. Linder has been making appearances on the campaign trail with Huckabee since yesterday.
Huckabee said the bill had sponsors, but what it really needed is a "president that will work with him, and the rest of Congress, and the American people so this is not just some theory that economists say, boy that would really revive the economy, but rather, so moms and dads out there trying to get their kids to school will be able to say, the Fair Tax is going to revive our family's capacity to live better than ever before."
"That's the kind of tax system America needs," said Huckabee. "It's the kind of tax system we will have when we enact the Fair Tax."
The "Fair Tax" would eliminate the income tax and replace it with a national sales tax.
On the debate tonight, he said, "If you're a praying person, pray hard for tonight. And if you're not a praying person, now would be a good night to start."
