Hubert Wins The Green At Audi

Hubert Green shot a 10-under-par 62 on Sunday for a five-stroke victory in the Audi Senior Classic, the first official Senior PGA Tour event in Mexico.

Green, the 1977 U.S. Open winner and 1985 PGA champion, birdied eight of the first 10 holes, playing the front nine in 7-under 29. He finished with 11 birdies the last a 1-foot putt on No. 18 after a 7-iron approach and had only one bogey.

"It was an awful lot of fun out there," Green said. "I hit the irons well, and made the putts. I'm striking the ball very solid. It was one of those fantastic days."

Green, who earned $225,000, had a 19-under 197 total on the La Vista course. The 19-time PGA Tour winner won the 1998 Bruno's Memorial Classic for his only other victory in three seasons on the 50-and-over tour.

"I felt I should win at some point this year because I've been hitting it so well," Green said. "I made some mistakes yesterday. I was able to eliminate them today."

Jim Colbert, who shared the second-round lead with Spain's Jose Maria Canizares, shot a 69 to tie for second with Dean Overturf (66) and Doug Tewell (67). Canizares shot a 70 to finish fifth.

Green matched the lowest score of his PGA Tour and Senior PGA Tour, an 8-under 62 in the PGA Tour's 1978 Texas Open.

"I changed by putting stroke a little yesterday. It worked today," Green said. "I think the golfing gods were here in Mexico, and they were good to me."

Green made a 15-foot birdie putt on No. 13 to open a three-stroke lead over Colbert. After consecutive pars, Green made a 4-foot birdie putt on No. 16, dropped a stroke with a three-putt bogey on No. 17, and finished with the 1-footer on No. 18.

Green and Gil Morgan will defend their title next week in the Liberty Mutuals Legends of Golf in St. Augustine, Fla.
