How to Recover When You Didn't Hear the Question

cube-monkeys.jpgWith tongue planted firmly in cheek, MSN Careers offers 10 snappy responses to use when you realize someone just asked you a question, but you have no idea what it was because you were zoned out. (If you're anything like me, this happens three or four times a day.) A sampling:

  1. "I'm not going to dignify that with a response!"
  2. "Whoa, I just had one of my psychic realizations: someone in this room is embezzling money!"
  3. "What did you say about my wife!?" They will quickly repeat the question.
  4. Raise your index finger to your lips and say, "Shhh, let's all just listen with our hearts for a moment. I think the answer will become obvious."
The list is excerpted from the new book, Cube Monkeys: A Handbook for Surviving the Office Jungle. Now, normally I shy away from books with monkeys on the cover (or in the title), but the list made me chuckle out loud a few times -- and who couldn't use a good chuckle?
