How to Improve Your Gas Mileage
Gas is currently selling for around $3.69 per gallon in my neck of the woods -- ay caramba! Luckily, my commute to work involves only a flight of stairs, so I'm not feeling the pinch as much as some. If you're a more typical commuter, head to our very own government's list of tips for improving gas mileage. A sampling:
Drive Sensibly Aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and braking) wastes gas. It can lower your gas mileage by 33 percent at highway speeds and by 5 percent around town. Sensible driving is also safer for you and others, so you may save more than gas money. That tip alone can save you anywhere from 18 cents to $1.16 per gallon, according to the site. Other tips include observing the speed limit, using cruise control, and keeping your tires properly inflated -- all of which probably sound familiar, but definitely bear repeating in these green-thinking, wallet-draining times.
One thing to keep in mind: If you do decide to slow down and observe the speed limit, you'll have to leave earlier to reach your appointments on time. It might help to read our aptly titled post, How to Be on Time. Photo by racoles.
