How to Find the Best Deals Possible
Ready to head out into the retail battlefield for your holiday gift shopping?
"Early Show" Consumer Correspondent Susan Koeppen has tips to get you through every step of your holiday shopping.
Retailers have been hit hard this year by the bad economy, which has led many to start their discounts before Black Friday. Therefore, consumers have to get a move on if they hope to grab what they want.
Retailers kept inventory low and started sales early. The best advice is, if you see something you like, and the price is right, and you want it -- buy it! If you wait, it might not be there down the road as shopping kicks up. Half of Americans haven't even begun shopping.
Black Friday still has great deals, so head out early and make sure to read the fine print. Stores will have strings attached to their door-busting deals, such as "limited supply" or "four per store." Also, check the return policy, many have been changed to combat fraud.
Clothing and toys are on the top of everyone's gift wish list, so prepare yourself for a mad dash and maybe a little pushing and shoving.
Prefer to make your purchases online? Expect a lot of free shipping; 80 percent of online retailers say they will offer it.
Also, make sure to mark Dec. 17, Free Shipping Day, on your calendars. Freeshippingday.com has a list of more than 300 retailers, such as Toys R' Us, JC Penny, and the Apple Store promising free shipping and delivery by Christmas on all orders placed on Dec. 17.
One last tip for everyone: Avoid shopping if you're in a bad mood! Harvard Management Professor Jennifer Lerner has found people who feel depressed when they shop are willing to spend 30 percent more than other consumers.
