How one ad agency embraces Ebola

Ebola Communications is an advertising agency based in the Ukraine that doesn't seem to be bothered by its association with a deadly virus that is currently sweeping through parts of Africa.

"We took the name of Ebola virus, because it is widely considered to be the most dangerous and spreading rapidly virus in the world," says CEO Yaroslav Korets in an email to Advertising Age, which first reported the story. "Our idea was successful. Today, our name is well known among Ukrainian and European advertisers."

The CEO added in his email to Advertising Age that the current outbreak had not hurt its business.

U.S. companies are familiar with Ebola Communications as well. The trade publication notes that the agency, which describes itself as a "digital contractor," has worked with such blue chip names as Procter & Gamble (PG), Coca-Cola (KO) and PepsiCo (PEP). Spokespersons from these companies couldn't immediately be reached. Ebola Communications hasn't responded to an email requesting comment for this story.

To hammer the point home, Ebola describes itself as a "highly tailored agency specializing in viral marketing" on its website. According to the company's website, the business was founded in April 2008.

Meanwhile, the more familiar form of "Ebola" continues to leave a path a death and devastation in its wake According to the BBC, about 2,288 people have died from Ebola in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone and the World Health Organization has predicted that thousands more cases could occur. Liberia's Defense Minister Brownie Samukai described the disease as a "serious threat" to its national existence.
