James Fonnesbeck, who had been diving for over 40 years and had nearly 11,000 jumps under his belt, was taking Claudette Porter for her first jump when the mishap happened near the town of Mesquite, Nev. Porter's skydive was a gift from her granddaughter, who had arranged the trip for her birthday.

According to Mesquite police, the primary chute did not fully deploy, and the backup chute became tangled with the main chute when it was activated. The partial opening didn't slow the pair down enough, and they tragically hit the runway at Mesquite Municipal Airport, Mesquite police spokesman Jeffrey Smith told the Daily Mail.
