Hillary: Wish Him Well
Rudy may be out, but Hillary is very much in.
Minutes after Mayor Giuliani bowed out of the New York Senate race, citing his recent diagnosis of prostate cancer, the first lady took a podium in Manhattan and, in a brief statement, wished the mayor good health.
"I called him … to wish him well. To tell him that I knew this was a difficult decision. … I appreciated very much the chance to express these feelings and thoughts to him personally," the first lady said.
She told all New Yorkers they should take time to wish the mayor well, adding:
The campaign "is not about me or him or anybody else ... It's about the people of New York."
While refusing to discuss the politics of the situation, Hillary did say "He thanked me for calling him."
On Tuesday, the first lady become the official Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate race in New York.
Can anybody beat Hillary now?
She has been campaigning heavily all week, mostly around New York City, as the mayor made his final decision.
Mrs. Clinton accepted the nomination at the party's state convention Tuesday night, becoming the only first lady to ever run for public office.
The nomination by the 352 state delegates was unanimous.
