· Republican challenger, Crystal Young emerged from a field of five other candidates in the September primary with 28% of the vote.
· Young is not actively campaigning. As of October, there is no telephone listing for her and she is not holding campaign events.
· The Hawaii Republican Party has not had any contact with Young and is not aware of her work as a legislative researcher. They attribute her primary victory to the fact that she was the only candidate with a non-male, non-Caucasian name; Young is an Asian surname in Hawaii.
· Hawaii Republicans do not plan on assisting Young with her campaign as they view incumbent Sen. Daniel Inouye as unbeatable and are concentrating on defeating Democratic Gov. Benjamin Cayetano.
