Heros Save Toddler Who Fell 40 Feet

Two men are being hailed as heroes after catching a toddler who fell 40 feet from a third-story window of a home in Lawrence, Mass.

Robert Lemire, a 45-year-old father of two, was talking to a friend on his cell phone when he noticed a couple of young children throwing toys out a window in the apartment building across the street. A few minutes later, he heard a baby cry. He looked up and saw that 18-month-old Caliah Clark was being held out the window by her thre-and-four-year-old siblings.

"I saw her hanging out the window and just snapped, hung up and ran across the street," he told Early Show co-anchor Maggie Rodriguez.

There, Lemire met 23-year 23-year-old Alex Day, who'd been inside the same building at a Bible study meeting on the first floor. Together, they ran to the open window, and got there just in time.

"Robert and I just ran right underneath her," Day said. "And not less than one second, two seconds later, the two siblings just let go."

Day caught the child's head, while Lemire caught her feet, and when she was safely on the ground, Lemire called 911. She was taken to a hospital but is expected to be OK.

Caliah's father, Randall Clark, was in another room taking care of a newborn at the time. His wife, Rachael, wasn't home.

"As soon as I came in, I saw my two (other children) hanging out the window and I didn't see her, so it was probably the second that they caught her," Clark told Rodriguez. "Two seconds later, he comes up and he's holding my daughter."

Rachael said when she came home and heard the story, she was in shock.

"When I saw her, it was such a relief," she said. "To know that she was still here and healthy and alive, and in one piece, thanks to these two gentleman."

Randall thanked Lemire and Day and told the two men he owed them his life.

"There's nothing else you can say," he added. "I would have lost my life if she had lost her life. I wouldn't have been able to live with a situation like that."
