Herb Pearce, Calif. man, takes down "armed" would-be bank robber with bare hands

(CBS) FULLERTON, Calif. - A man who was at a Chase Bank branch in Fullerton, Calif., took down a man who claimed to be armed during an attempted robbery, according to CBS Los Angeles.

Herb Pearce told the station that a man, later identified as 29-year-old Jacob Williams, walked into the bank claiming to have a gun in a plastic bag and demanded money.

Pearce is seen on surveillance video clocking Williams after the would-be robber pointed a pretend-gun to Pearce's face.

The station reports William, who was not armed, was arrested on the spot.

Sgt. Jeff Stuart told the station police do not recommend customers to hit bank robbers but they give Pearce credit for stopping the crime.

Pearce, who is a termite exterminator, fractured his hand when taking Williams down. He said doesn't have health insurance and doesn't know how he'll cover the medical expenses but still has no regrets.

"I'll be darned if some junkie is gonna come off the street and take my (money). I put too many hours to get that... paycheck. So I'm not gonna let him take my money," said Pearce to the station.

A spokesperson for Chase Bank reportedly said they are looking into covering Pearce's medical bills.
