Hawaii Rewards Jones

Hawaii coach June Jones was given a three-year contract extension on Friday, a month after leading the Rainbow Warriors to the greatest single-season turnaround in NCAA history.

Jones took over a winless team last season and guided Hawaii to a 9-4 record, including a victory over Oregon State in the Oahu Bowl.

The extension was approved by the school's Board of Regents. Jones now has seven years remaining on his contract. He'll also receive an annuity a reported $100,000 if he remains at the school for at least five more years.

Jones, who played a season at Hawaii in the early 1970s, has said in the past that "this is where I want to be for the next 20 years."

Jones has an annual salary package worth about $320,000, of which $150,000 is his base salary. The remainder is paid for by the football booster club, Na Koa, private contributions and radio and TV contracts.

Hawaii was 0-12 in 1998, and the nine-game improvement topped the eight-game swings by Purdue in 1943 and Stanford in 1940.
