Guitarist to Cameron: Stop Saying You Like The Smiths
British Prime Minister David Cameron may be a fan of The Smiths, but the love doesn't seem to be reciprocated.
Guitarist Johnny Marr, a founding member of The Smiths who also plays with Modest Mouse, went to the Internet to tell Cameron to cool it.
"Stop saying that you like The Smiths, no you don't," he wrote on Twitter. "I forbid you to like it."
Formed in the 1980s, The Smiths are considered one of the most influential British bands. Hits include "This Charming Man" and "What Difference Does it Make?"
The Daily Mirror reports Cameron has often said The Smith's "gloomy music" is on his iPod. In 2008, he tried to recreate an iconic image of The Smiths, used on the sleeve of 1986 album The Queen Is Dead.
The Guardian says that it's not the first time a British politician has been embarrassed by claiming to like a rock band.
Gordon Brown told a men's magazine that the Arctic Monkeys were his favorite band, but couldn't name any song titles. Tony Blair claimed to like Oasis - which irked lead singer Noel Gallagher, the Guardian reports.
So how should Cameron respond to Marr? "Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want" or "Big Mouth Strikes Again?"
Or perhaps "Tweet is Murder."
