Grave Error: Family buries wrong woman after mortuary mix-up

(CBS) INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Call it a case of being switched-at-death.

Funeral regulators are investigating an Inglewood mortuary's mistake, after a family and friends learned they had buried the wrong woman - someone they thought was 82-year-old Darlene Davidson, but who was really someone else.

CBS Los Angeles reported that Davidson's family believed they had buried her on March 1, but learned days later that another family also reported that the woman supposed to be in another casket wasn't their relative either.

Davidson's family already had their suspicions.

Her son, Eric Haynes, said the family actually told officials at Simpson's Family Mortuary during the viewing that something was wrong.

"The mortician, the guy that dresses them, he convinced us that was her," Haynes said.

Reginald Black, a spokesman for the mortuary, apologized for the mistake.

"In this case, there was an error made and we are diligently working with both families to be in resolve," he said.

Darlene Davidson will now be buried Wednesday.

Her family, and their attorney, were at the mortuary on Monday to make sure the correct body was indeed now in the casket.

The California Cemetery and Funeral Bureau is investigating the incident.
