Graphic Video in Boy's Uzi Death Shown to Jurors in Mass. Gun Show Case
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (CBS/AP) A jury in a manslaughter trial saw the graphic video of 8-year-old Christopher Bizilj accidentally shooting himself with an Uzi submachine gun at a Massachusetts gun fair two years ago.
The video, taken by the victim's father, Dr. Charles Bizilij, shows the young boy shooting the gun when the front of the weapon kicks back toward his head, sending a bullet through his cheek and brain. A collective gasp went through the courtroom when it was played.
Former Pelham, Massachusetts police chief Edward Fleury, whose company COPS Firearms & Training co-sponsored the 2008 event with the Westfield Sportsman's Club, has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter and furnishing a weapon to a minor in connection with the boy's death.
Dr. Charles Bizilij testified moments before the video was shown, saying that he was videotaping his son when the boy disappeared from the viewfinder.
He said he found his son unresponsive on the ground. When he reached to pick him up, he found discovered a portion of his son's skull was missing.
Prosecutor William Bennett has argued that Christopher was too young to control the powerful weapon which fires 1,200 rounds per minute.
Defense attorney Rosemary Scapicchio denied that Fleury acted illegally or recklessly, saying the event was controlled and organized, and other besides Fleury had final say over who should shoot the guns. She also noted that Dr. Charles Bizilj signed a waiver form acknowledging the risks at the event, including death.
If convicted, Fleury faces a maximum of 20 years in prison on the manslaughter charge and a maximum of 10 years if convicted of furnishing a weapon to a minor.
