"Grandmother of all battles" in Pa. maternity ward
PITTSBURGH - The impending birth of twins brought out the worst in two matriarchs of the family who came to blows in a Pennsylvania maternity ward, reports CBS Pittsburgh.
The incident occurred August 31 in Brighton Township at Heritage Valley Beaver Hospital.
According to a criminal complaint, Shirley Irvin, 72, of Enon Valley, was waiting for her twin great-grandchildren to be born. Her grandson is the father of the twins, reports the station.
Irvin was in the hospital waiting room with other relatives, including Carole Alberts, the great-grandmother of the woman giving birth. That's right -- the twins would be her great-great grandchildren.
The complaint says Alberts made a comment to her daughter stating that she was worried about her great, great-grand babies.
Irvin overheard it. Alberts - the more senior of the two women - says Irvin approached her and they started arguing.
Alberts says Irvin hit and shoved her in the upper part of her chest and arm, leaving a small mark on her arm, according to CBS Pittsburgh.
The complaint says Alberts' daughter intervened, then Irvin swung and punched her on the left side of her head, knocking her cochlear hearing implant off her head and onto the floor.
Hospital security then asked those involved in the fight to leave the maternity ward, according to the complaint.
Irvin told CBS Pittsburgh she was upset that day about something Alberts had said about her grandson.
And, she said, the whole the incident did not happen the way it was told to police.
Meanwhile, Alberts did not return a request for comment.
Irvin is charged with simple assault and harassment in the incident, reports the station.
All in all, not really so great.
