Glamour Magazine Announces The New 'Jake'

Jake has a face. Jake has a name.

For 50 years, the monthly male dating advice columnist for Glamour magazine, Jake, was anonymous. You can't say the same for the newest Jake. Three men were vying for the position and thousands of Glamour readers and The Early Show viewers voted Michael Somerville as the new Jake.

On Tuesday, Michael Somerville and Glamour magazine's executive editor, Jill Herzig, stopped by The Early Show to discuss Somerville's new job.

Somerville, 34, is a stand-up comic from New York City. He describes himself as a very reflective person. He believes that his past as a stand-up comedian will aid him in his column as he has been analyzing the good and the bad in relationships for many years.

After 35,000 votes were cast, Somerville defeated Adam Stein and Neel Shah for the coveted dating column.

In the past, Jake's identity has been kept a secret, but now Somerville will be presented with new challenges as his dates will be on public display.

"It'll be interesting," he said. "I've received a few e-mails from people I've never met. I think it'll be an odd thing to have a public eye. Some people will probably be drawn to it and other people (won't be) attracted."

The first new Jake column will appear in the August issue of Glamour. In his first piece, Somerville said one of the toughest parts of the competition was being presentable for TV. "I had to stop acting and looking like the schlubby guy who gets Katherine Heigl pregnant in 'Knocked Up.' Unless I made some changes, it wouldn't be just one awesome woman I didn't deserve to date; it'd be more like 12 million — the readers of (Glamour magazine)," he said.

Somerville describes his new column as a step into adulthood. While he has always viewed himself as a regular guy, Somerville acknowledges that his new position means he will have new responsibilities.

"But this Jake thing feels like a fork in the road heading to Grownupville," Somerville said. "Every guy faces this moment sooner or later. Even if we think adult responsibility is the right way, we're still anxious about it because it's also the way that leads to marriage, a mortgage, the kids' college tuition and a prescription for cholesterol pills."

Although he is "a little nervous," Somerville said he is excited to be Jake in his new column and looks forward to imparting his dating wisdom upon his (mostly female) readers.
