Giving Back Via 'Volunteer Vacations'

So-called volunteer vacations are becoming more popular with baby boomers who are longing to use their years of knowledge and experience to make a difference in the world.

Those vacations can change other people's lives forever, as well as those of the volunteers.

One such volunteer is Sarah Miller of Roslyn, N.Y., who has gone on such vacations through a group called Global Volunteers.

Miller says the events of Sept. 11 spurred her to action: "Rather than just give money to causes, which I believe in doing this was a way for me Sarah as person to make a difference. Even if it's in the life of one child to go to a place like Pram, Pram a fishing village in Ghana and teach third graders and hold those children in your arms there is nothing like it."

She spoke about her experiences, and Global Volunteers, on The Early Show Friday.

With her was More magazine Editor in Chief Peggy Northrop, who offered suggestions on how to get involved.

Northrop encourages people to donate to the cause, saying, "We know how much women enjoy being with their friends and doing things together. So, we are inviting our readers, and Early Show viewers to join together in 'giving circles' to benefit CARE's work around the globe.

"Millions of women and girls live on less than one dollar a day, and empowering them is the key to lifting their communities out of poverty."

More has joined with CARE in a program called the CARE MORE Giving Challenge to help poverty-stricken women around the world.
