Girl Crushed To Death In Elevator
Investigators want to know what led to a 12-year-old girl beings crushed to death in a homeless shelter's freight elevator in Dayton, Ohio.
Witnesses say the last time they saw Alexis France she was folding laundry. Later, workers at the shelter heard screams and a banging sound coming from a freight elevator.
When firefighters arrived Monday, they found the girl trapped between the elevator's inner and outer doors in a space less than four inches wide.
An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday. Investigators say they don't suspect foul play.
According to the Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation, there are some 600,000 passenger elevators in the U.S., each carrying an average of 225,000 people each year.
Annually, only a small perentage of riders -- 10,000 -- are hospitalized because of elevator mishaps.
