Gingrich's Freddie Mac contract will be released today

Under fierce attack by primary rival Mitt Romney for his work for the mortgage giant Freddie Mac, Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich will release his contract with quasi-governmental organization today, according to a spokesman for the Gingrich Group.

Media Relations Director Susan Meyers said the document will be made public "this evening," though she declined to say specifically whether it would be in advance of the NBC/National Journal/Tampa Bay Times at 9 p.m. in Tampa, Fla.

Since his disappointing loss to Gingrich in Saturday's South Carolina primary, Romney has aggressively stepped up his attacks on the former House speaker's tenure in Congress and his work as a business consultant. Romney says Gingrich in effect was a lobbyist and Washington insider, even as he portrays himself as the candidate who will radically change the ways of Washington.

Gingrich reportedly earned more than $1.6 million from Freddie Mac over eight years after leaving Congress in early 1999.
