Gibbs: Obama Hasn't Smoked in 9 Months

CBS

Has President Obama finally quit smoking? White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs says yes.

A few weeks ago, Gibbs told reporters that he had not witnessed any evidence of the president having a cigarette since March. In an interview for CNN over the weekend, Gibbs expanded on those remarks, saying Mr. Obama "has done enormously well in quitting."

"It was a commitment that I think he made to himself at the end of the health care and with his two daughters in mind," he said on CNN's "State of the Union."

Gibbs also confirmed the news via Twitter, saying "POTUS hasnt' [sic] had a cigarette in about 9 months."

Gibbs added Mr. Obama still chews Nicorette gum and that this was the longest period since he's known him that he has gone without smoking.
