Giada De Laurentiis Dishes About Baby

Food Network star Giada De Laurentiis is expecting a baby girl whom she hopes will keep up the family tradition in the kitchen.

"I hope I can pass on the love of food to my child the way my family did to me," DeLaurentiis tells Redbook in their January issue. "We spent a lot of warm, loving times in the kitchen. But watch, I will probably end up with a child who not only doesn't care about food but doesn't ever want to set foot in a kitchen!"

According to her Web site, De Laurentiis was born in Rome and grew up in a large family of foodies which included her grandfather, film producer Dino De Laurentiis.

She studied at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and continued her training at the Ritz Carlton Fine Dining room in Los Angeles and Wolfgang Puck's Spago in Beverly Hills.

She got her big break while working at Food and Wine magazine as a food stylist. The Food Network invited her to shoot a pilot after seeing a feature she wrote for the magazine about a dinner she organized in honor of her famous grandfather.

In addition to hosting "Everyday Italian" and "Giada's Weekend Getaways" on the network, De Laurentiis is a contributor to NBC's "Today Show."

With her busy work schedule, she says she isn't home often enough to enjoy her own kitchen or the company of her husband, designer Todd Thompson.

Technology helps the couple stay in touch.

"A lot of texting! A lot!" she said. "The key is, whatever I'm doing, he loves to know: Who am I working with? Where am I staying? He needs to know that to feel connected to what I'm doing, even if he's not there everyday."

De Laurentiis announced on NBC's "Today" show on Nov. 5 that she's expecting a baby in early April. It's the first child for the 37-year-old chef and her husband.
