Get Ready to Go "Aww:" Panda Babies Born in Spain

Madrid's Zoo showed off a couple of newborn panda twins, the first known to be conceived using artificial insemination outside of China. The gender of the cubs is still unknown.

Maria del Cloux, the Madrid Zoo's veterinarian, told the Guardian that "it is very important because this is an animal that is crucial within the world program for conservation because there are only a few of them. Having two more is a great addition to the program - there are about 300 animals at the moment - two more is a significant addition."

Giant panda populations used to flourish throughout southern and eastern China as well as in Myanmar and northern parts of Vietnam. But their numbers have been reduced as humans pushed into the animals' traditional habitats. The World Wildlife Federation says according to satellite imagery, giant pandas lost half of their habitat between 1974 and 1989.
