Get Language Translations on the Run with Google Translate for iPhone
If you need one more reason to choose an iPhone when traveling abroad, check out the new version of Google Translate. It makes simple work of translating any word, phrase, or question from one language to another.
Google Translate for iPhone (and iPod touch) is a browser-based tool, not an application that needs installing. Just point the Safari browser to translate.google.com, type in the words you want translated, and then tap the language buttons to select the "to" and "from" languages. The tool supports several dozen, everything from Arabic to Swedish. If you don't know how to speak the language, you can always flash the screen at the person with whom you're trying to communicate.
For anyone who regularly travels to countries where there's a language barrier, Google Translate is a must-bookmark tool. It's free, of course, and it's fantastic. (Note: Owners of other mobile phones can use the service as well, just without the same interface bells and whistles.) [via Google Mobile Blog]
