George Jones to be remembered at public funeral

George Jones will be remembered at a public funeral, set for Thursday at The Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, starting at 10 a.m. The country singer died Friday at age 81.

Publicist Kirt Webster said, "George would have wanted his fans and friends everywhere to be able to come and pay their respects along with his family."

Jones' wife, Nancy, said in a statement: "Thanks to George's friends, fans, and loved ones for the outpouring of love at this terrible time. I love you all."

A private visitation for family, friends and fellow music artists will take place on Wednesday night. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that contributions be made to the Grand Ole Opry trust fund.

Jones became a member of the Grand Ole Opry in 1956. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1992.
