NEW YORK (CBS) George Clooney contracted malaria during his recent  trip to Sudan, according to Piers Morgan.

He has since recovered, his rep said in a statement obtained by People magazine.

"George is completely over the Malaria he contracted while in the Sudan during the first week in January," he said. "This illustrates how with proper medication, the most lethal condition in Africa, can be reduced to a bad ten days instead of a death sentence."

The Hollywood star and activist traveled to Sudan earlier this month to launch a satellite monitoring system in hopes to avoid another civil crisis during South Sudan's historic referendum.

"A lot of bad things really happen when the lights are turned off," he toldCBS News about the Satellite Sentinel Project, which was joint venture with the U.N's Operational Satellite Applications Programme, Harvard University, Google, Enough Project and Clooney's human rights organization, Not On Our Watch.

"We are just trying to turn the flood lights on."
