Ga. police: 6 drivers in 7-car pile-up charged with drunk driving

According to Georgia authorities, six of the seven drivers involved in an early morning pile-up outside Atlanta were charged with driving under the influence.

Clayton County Police spokeswoman Officer Danielle Rosa told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the accident early Friday was caused by a pedestrian walking onto Interstate 75, a major highway in Georgia. The AJC reports that the pedestrian was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

A car struck the pedestrian about 3 a.m. Friday, starting what police said was a chain reaction that led to the seven-car pile-up, according to reports. Six of the drivers in the accident had been charged with drunk driving, police said.

According to CBS Atlanta, the pedestrian was charged with pedestrian in the road way.

According to the AJC, authorities said five of the drivers charged with driving under the influence were taken to jail and the sixth driver was taken to the hospital.

WSB Radio reports that the southbound lanes of Interstate 75 south of downtown Atlanta were closed shortly after the 3 a.m. Friday accident. The wreckage was cleared by 9 a.m.
