HARTFORD, Conn. (CBS/AP) How low can you go?

Ask Connecticut funeral home director Kevin Riley,  who was sentenced Tuesday to eight months in prison, for stealing money and other valuables from the homes of dead people.

The judge also ordered Riley to give up his licenses as a funeral director and embalmer. He must pay nearly $63,000 in restitution to victims' families, as well as state agencies that he double-billed.

Hartford Superior Court Judge David Gold said at the hearing that Riley abused his position of trust and preyed on vulnerable clients of his Coventry, Conn. funeral home.

The 54-year-old Riley pleaded guilty in August to several larceny charges and could have gotten up to two years in prison.

A defense lawyer read a statement from Riley in which he said the mistakes he made were to support his wife and children.
