France: Malian Man Dies After Stun Gun Shooting

French authorities say a man from Mali died after being shot twice by a stun gun as police broke up a domestic dispute in an apartment in suburban Paris.

Interior Minister Brice Hortefeux has defended the French police's use of stun guns, and said the 38-year-old man was "extremely aggressive" when officers intervened in Colombes, west of the capital.

The minister said four officers were injured in the melee between the man, who was an illegal immigrant, and an apartment owner late Monday. An autopsy was under way.

Stun guns have come under criticism in France. The weapons are used by police around the world and are designed as a non-lethal means to immobilize suspects, though they have been blamed for some deaths.
