Former Virginia governor's grandson charged with UVA student's rape

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - A former University of Virginia student has been charged with sexually assaulting another student.

Dalton Baril turned himself into Albemarle County authorities Wednesday, local outlets reported. The 20-year-old is charged with rape and forcible sodomy in the February incident.

City Prosecutor Areshini Pather went over the allegations at Baril's bond hearing, saying Baril restrained and sexually assaulted the woman. The woman sustained bites and bruises.

Pather said that Baril later sent a text message to the woman, writing: "I'm sorry if I got overly excited."

The woman attended Wednesday's hearing. Baril, who appeared in court through a teleconference, has not entered a plea. Court documents with further details on the case remain sealed.

Baril is a member of a prominent Republican family in Virginia, the son of Steve Baril, who made an unsuccessful bid in 2005 for the Republican nomination for attorney general, and the grandson of former Gov. John N. Dalton. He withdrew from the university, which was also attended by his grandfather and mother, in April, after the university began investigating the allegations.

According to CBS affiliate WCAV, Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Areshini Pather said Thursday that Baril bought the victim a shot at Trinity restaurant on the UVA Corner, then walked with her to his apartment.

Pather said the woman used Baril's bathroom and when she came out, Baril was in his underwear. He allegedly then assaulted her on the bed, biting her lip and breast.

The woman later went to the hospital where Pather said an exam revealed bruising on her body and vaginal tearing.

WCAV reports that Baril's attorney Rhonda Quagliana said in court Baril will rigorously contest the claims.

A judge granted Baril's counsel's request to release him into the custody of his parents on $10,000 bond, citing his cooperation with authorities. Baril voluntarily submitted a DNA swab. The terms of his release stipulate he must remain in his mother's or father's house under electronic monitoring, refrain from contacting the victim and abstain from drugs and alcohol.

He is due back in court on Aug. 10.
