Former Kosher Slaughterhouse Manager Faces 27 Years In Prison for Federal Fraud
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (CBS/AP/KGAN) Former kosher slaughterhouse manager Sholom Rubashkin awaits a hearing Tuesday where a judge intends to sentence him to 27 years in prison and $31 million in restitution, for some most unholy financial crimes.
According to CBS affiliate KGAN, last fall a jury found Rubashkin guilty on 86 counts of federal financial fraud. The ex-manager was convicted of fabricating invoices to mislead his lender into believing the plant was profiting more than it actually was. Close to 400 illegal immigrants were detained when police raided the Postville meatpacking plant in May 2008, although charges stemming from the raid were eventually dismissed.
Twenty-three former prosecutors have urged the judge to moderately sentence Rubashkin, a first-time offender. Chief U.S. District Court Judge Linda Reade released a sentencing memorandum Monday indicating she would not impose a fine, said KGAN.
Guy Gook, Rubashkin's attorney, told KGAN that the expected sentencing for his client is still excessive and he plans to appeal Rubashkin's conviction.
