Former eBay Head Meg Whitman Considers California Gubernatorial Bid

This story was written by David Kaplan.

Meg Whitman, who announced her retirement as eBay (NSDQ: EBAY) CEO last January, is considering whether to run for California governor, WSJ reported, citing an unidentified source. Whitman has stepped down from her seats on the boards eBay, Procter & Gamble and Dreamworks Animation SKG, which would clear any obvious conflicts of interest. The WSJ source said Whitman could make her bid for the 2010 race public within the next four to six weeks.

A person who WSJ identified only as a California Republican Party official said Whitman will have a team assembled by the end of the month and is bringing on people from the campaign of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. Whitman campaigned for Romney in the Republican presidential primaries and then through her allegiance to Sen. John McCain, after he became the party's nominee.
