Florida girl, 16, stabs male classmate in after-school melee, police say

LAUDERHILL, Fla. -- A high-school student who was stabbed after getting off a school bus in Boward County, Florida, is recovering at a hospital from wounds he suffered at the hands of a 16-year-old female classmate, now facing charges for the violent incident, CBS Miami reports.

Police received a 911 call at around 3:20 p.m. on Wednesday reporting a disturbance. They said a group of Piper High School students had been dropped off by a school bus when an argument broke out.

"The initial information we were getting is that it was a large group of juveniles," said Lauderhill Police Department Lt. Greg Solowsky. "The caller believed there was possibly a fight in progress."

Responding officers say the fight moved and they spotted a group of about 10 to 20 students a couple of blocks from the original scene before noticing the victim collapsed on the ground.

"When the officer got out of his vehicle and the crowd dispersed, we noticed that there was one victim laying on the ground, come to find out he was the victim of a stabbing," Solowsky told the station.

Police said the teen was rushed to Broward General Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Hours after the initial incident, Lauderhill Police said they arrested a 16-year-old girl, who police said attends Piper High in Sunrise, Fla. She has been charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

The investigation is ongoing.

"Fortunately we had a lot of witnesses who did remain on the scene," Solowsky said.
