Fixing Your Make-Up Mess-Ups
A woman can buy the most expensive make-up there is, but if she applies it incorrectly, the fabulous look -- which is the goal -- is lost.
The make-up artist of Jennifer Lopez, Angelina Jolie, Rihanna, and Ashlee Simpson-Wentz, Mally Roncal, knows make-up -- and what can go wrong.
Roncal, the founder of Mally Beauty, discussed on "The Early Show" Thursday the biggest cosmetics mistakes women make and how to fix them.
"The idea of wearing make-up," Roncal told CBS News, "is for people to notice you look better and healthier. When you have poor application, you run the risk of looking older and add years to your look."
MAKE-UP PROBLEMS:
1) PROBLEM #1: Heavy foundation that doesn't properly match the skin tone and over-the-top bronzer
Most likely foundation will be too light for a woman's neck, according to Roncal. She suggests finding your perfect foundation color.
When finding the right shade of foundation, the number one secret is to match the foundation to your neck. Apply the product to your jaw line and blend down. If the foundation is still visible after blending then it's the wrong color.
As for too much bronzer, Roncal says the look becomes a throwback to the 80s.
"Many women will use bronzer all over the face, which is wrong," she says.
Roncal's method involves color matching. She recommends blending a small amount of bronzer with your blush to give a natural glow:
Use the matte bronzer and begin applying it on the jaw line, just behind your ear. Continue smoothing your brush in a circular motion around the perimeter of your face, hairline, temples and hollow of the cheeks
To add depth and a more natural glow, apply a hint of pink blush on the apple of the cheek.
To highlight and add dimension, use a shimmer product on the check bone, across the nose and brow bone.
2) PROBLEM #2: Poorly drawn eyebrows
Roncal said the number one problem is when women don't do their eyebrows at all.
"It can age you," she said. "If you want an instant brow lift, do you eyebrows it takes 10 years off of you."
Must-have tools: A great tweezer, a brow brush -- brush them up to see what you're working with, brow pencil -- fill in any issues you have, brow fix -- that will hold the hairs up.
When choosing a brow pencil, opt for a color that is slightly lighter than your brow color.
3) PROBLEM #3: Dark lip liner and smudged (panda) eyes
"It's so obvious," Roncal said. "If you are doing this look, just stop."
For your lips: Lip liner should match your natural lip tone (not your lipstick or darker than your lipstick
Roncal said, you can use a natural liner and overdraw slightly to give a full lip without looking fake.
For your eyes: Start with a primer that will fuse with the powder shadow and lock in color.
Roncal said you should apply a light shadow over the top and blend so there are no harsh lines.
She added, "You want to use an eye shadow base that gives your eye make-up something to adhere to, too. You always want to set your eyeliner with a little bit of powder, and that will keep it from traveling."
