Firefox Plug-in Cleans Up Bookmark Clutter
CheckPlaces may not have the most glamorous (or revealing) name, but it performs a highly desirable function: finds and removes duplicate and broken bookmarks in Firefox.
See, as time goes on, most of us collect more and more favorites in our browser. Sometimes we collect the same ones twice, or even a third time. Meanwhile, it's not uncommon for sites to vanish into Web air, meaning the link is no longer viable.
The CheckPlaces plug-in scans your bookmarks for duplicates, then gives you the option of deleting them. At the same time, it can look for broken links -- those that produce some kind of error when the plug-in tries to connect.
After installing CheckPlaces, look in Firefox's Bookmarks menu for its newly added entry. Click it, then choose the scan options you want. If you include the option to check if pages still exist, it may take a few minutes to finish -- especially if you have a lot of bookmarks.
I love any tool that helps me cut down on clutter, and CheckPlaces definitely qualifies. What's nice is that after you run it, you can uninstall it (thereby cutting down on plug-in clutter) until you want to run it again in, say, six months.
