Fatal designer drug overdose: Arrest made in Minn. mass overdose that killed one, hospitalized 10

21-year-old Timothy Richard Lamere. Anoka County Sheriff's Office

(CBS/WCCO) MINNEAPOLIS - Anoka County police have arrested Timothy Richard Lamere, 21, for providing the drug 2C-E that was used in the mass overdose that killed a 19-year-old father and hospitalized 10 others.

Lamere purchased, possessed and provided the drug 2C-E, which is legally sold online, to the group. He is being held for third degree murder, reported CBS station WCCO.

The 10 teens and young adults who were hospitalized are now recovering at home in Blaine, Minn., about 17 miles outside of Minneapolis. Trevor Robinson, 19, from Coon Rapids, MInn., died after taking the drug.

They all took the drug during a spring break party at a home in Blaine, Minn. Wednesday night. The parents of the teen who threw the party had been out of town and their son was supposed to be staying with a friend, the station reported.

The drug is a pill that is ground down and either snorted or mixed in a drink. It has a slow on-set when ingested, causing users to feel like they need to take more. It can lead to an increase in body temperature, irregular heartbeat and an overdose, according to Dr. Jennifer Ashton who discussed its affects on CBS' "The Early Show."

"People can be lulled into a false sense of security that it's safe because it's legal. Obviously it's deadly," said Dr. Ashton told the morning show.

Robinson's brother, John, told WCCO that his brother had just turned 19 last weekend, had just become a father and was hoping to finish college.

According to the station, investigators are not saying right now how much of the drug was ingested by the eleven people who took it.
