Fall's Hot Hair Hues For You

As those autumnal clothes come out from the back of your closet, it's time to start thinking about your whole fall look, including your hair color. Stylist to the stars David Evangelista visits The Early Show to present three of the hot hair hues seen on celebrities and models this fall.

Last week, models Melissa, Pamela and Kate visited the John Barrett salon at Bergdorf Goodman to get their look updated for the new season. Check out their before and after looks and get inspired to change.

Chocolate Brown with Cinnamon Highlights
Model: Melissa
The chocolate brown with cinnamon highlights look is one that is seen on celebrities such as Drew Barrymore. It's a rich brown color, but the cinnamon highlights give the hair a hint of reddish shine. It's not brassy, but highlights are woven-in well to the chocolate base color for a pop; just the tiniest hint of red.

Melissa came into the salon with a rich chocolate brown base color and a few blondish highlights, so colorist Jennifer Costa decided to work with what Melissa already had. She left the base color as it was, then swept some cinnamon-colored highlights through Melissa's hair. About 20 minutes later, the highlights were rinsed out, a color-enhancing gloss was applied to Melissa's hair for extra shine and depth, and the result is a rich color that looks perfect for the fall.

If you want to try adding a few highlights to your hair at home, look for a highlighting kit that is specifically formulated for your hair color, and one that will give you the highlight color you want (i.e., if you're brunette and want red highlights, look for a kit that says it'll give you auburn highlights). And pay attention to the instructions in the kit. Nothing looks worse than color that's been left on too long; you want your color to be enhanced, not cheap looking.

Auburn Red
Model: Pamela
This look is probably best demonstrated of late on actress Julianne Moore, who's well known for her auburn tresses. The key to this hair color is not going too purple, finding the right shade for your skin tone and eye color is vital.

If you're going to try to do this at home, look for a hair color with the words "auburn" or "cedar," not colors with blue or purple undertones. Since Pamela's skin is so light, and she has blue eyes, Evangelista and Costa decided that a dark auburn would look best on her. Rosie at the John Barrett Salon applied a deeply colored permanent hue to Pamela's hair and let her "cook" for about 30 minutes. She was rinsed and a gloss was applied. Of the three looks, this one is probably the most easy to re-create at home with a semi-permanent color you can buy at the drug or beauty supply store.

Pale Blonde
Model: Kate
Gone are the days of the visibly-highlighted hair; this season, if you're going blonde, it's all about being an all-over pale blonde like Kirsten Dunst. It's a more uniform color that's not brassy or striped; rather, it's a muted, subdued blonde that's ladylike and subtle. Kate came into the salon with medium-brown hair, so Jennifer started on transforming her with a full head of highlights. Since Kate was going so much lighter, she had to keep the color on for almost an hour, and Jennifer put her under a heating lamp to speed up and enhance the lightening process. When the highlights were rinsed out, an all-over glaze was applied to Kate's hair to even out the blonde and diminish any brassiness that the bleach may have left on her hair.
