Explosives suspect killed by law enforcement in Kentucky

HARLAN COUNTY, Ky. -- An explosives suspect was killed by law enforcement Thursday in eastern Kentucky as he was leading local, state and federal investigators to explosive devices he's accused of planting, according to Kentucky State Police and CBS affiliate WYMT.

Mark Sawaf, of Harlan County, was charged last month after allegedly rigging trail cameras - used to track deer and other wildlife - with explosives. WYMT reports he had been ordered to remain jailed until his trial, but because of public safety concerns Sawaf was in Harlan County with authorities to locate several more of the devices.

That's when, according to state police, Sawaf was involved in an altercation with ATF agents and investigators with the Lexington Police Department and Lexington Fire Department Arson Unit. Sawaf was fatally shot during the confrontation.

"It's very unfortunate anytime law enforcement has to use deadly force, but it's very early in the investigation. We're still trying to gather details on what led up to this," Kentucky State Police Trooper Shane Jacobs told the station.

Kentucky State Police in Harlan County are handling the shooting investigation.
