(CBS/AP) APOLLO BEACH, Fla. - A former NYPD detective was convicted on Thursday of setting his estranged wife on fire, leaving her severely burned.

A jury in Tampa found Christopher Hanney, 46, guilty of attempted murder, aggravated battery and arson. He faces a possible life sentence.

Hanney's wife, 29-year-old Audrey Mabrey, had moved out of the couple's Apollo Beach home but stopped by in November 2009. Prosecutors say Hanney doused his wife with gasoline and set her on fire because she was divorcing him.

According to CBS affiliate WTSP, Mabrey was burned over 80 percent of her body and spent three months recovering from her injuries in the hospital.

The defense told jurors that Mabrey and an unknown accomplice attacked Hanney, and that Mabrey was accidentally burned during the incident.
