Ex-NFLer Shows Moves To Police

A former pro football player faces charges after a police chase.

In the end, it took five officers to tackle Darryl Lewis, reports Sandra Mitchell of CBS station KCBS-TV in Los Angeles.

The chase was

.

Los Angeles police say they pursued a pickup truck driven by Lewis, who played 10 seasons in the National Football League for the Houston Oilers and San Diego Chargers.

At one point, officers had Lewis cornered with four police cars surrounding his stopped pickup, and guns drawn. But Lewis managed to slip away, and again went speeding down streets of West Covina, Calif.

Family members told Mitchell that Lewis has medical problems, and at first didn't realize police were chasing him.

"He didn't pull over because he probably didn't understand that police were pulling him over because he didn't do anything," says a relative whose first name is Percy.

The pursuit ended, Mitchell says, when Lewis stopped outside his parents' West Covina house.

When he got out of the pickup, it took five officers to bring Lewis down.

"Of all the people I've ever had to wrestle with, this was the hardest. Absolutely. He was literally carrying us. He was so strong, it was unbelievable," says Steve Licon of the California Highway Patrol.

Lewis is charged with driving under the influence and evading police.
