Elvis Is Still The King!
Even in death, Elvis is still the king.
Elvis Presley, the King of Rock 'n' Roll, was crowned top-earning dead celebrity of the past 12 months Monday, according to a list compiled by Forbes.com, the Web site of the popular business magazine, Forbes.
On the same day, the world learned Elvis is a brand new father-in-law following Saturday's marriage of Presley's daughter, Lisa Marie, 34, to movie star Nicolas Cage, 38.
But the news got even better for the deceased rocker.
Presley earned $37 million from June 2001 to June 2002, according to Forbes.com, which ranked the earnings of the dead and famous for the second year in a row. Four million dollars came from a British dance remix of his 1968 song "A Little Less Conversation."
Coming in second behind Presley was "Peanuts" cartoonist Charles Schulz, who raked in $28 million for the year.
Rounding out the top five were Beatle John Lennon, at $20 million; new addition race-car driver Dale Earnhardt, also at $20 million; and Theodor "Dr. Seuss" Geisel, at $19 million.
Also new on the list are former Beatle George Harrison with $17 million in earnings, rapper Tupac Shakur with $7 million, and author Robert Ludlum with $5 million.
Among those bumped off this year's list were singer Frank Sinatra, actor James Dean and artists Andy Warhol and Keith Haring.
Forbes reporters determined the top dead earners by looking at estates, interviewing lawyers and surviving family members, and calculating pretax earnings to the estates from licensing agreements and book and record sales.
Presley died on Aug. 16, 1977 of a drug-induced heart attack at his home in Memphis. He was 42. His daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, is the sole heir of Elvis Presley Enterprises.
