VIERA, Fla. -- Authorities say an 89-year-old man was killed when he was sucked into a hole, which was created by a damaged fire hydrant in Florida. 

According to CBS affiliate WKMG-TV, Melbourne resident Robert Dreyer was driving a 2016 Mercedes G300 when he veered off a residential road in Viera and struck a hydrant on Wednesday morning.

Authorities say Dreyer got out of his vehicle as water spewed in the area. He was quickly pulled under the car and into a hole, which was flooded by pressurized water flow. 

Witnesses rushed over and managed to pull Dreyer out of the hole. Paramedics transported him to a nearby hospital where he later died. His cause of death has not been released. 

Hospital officials believe Dreyer may have suffered a medical incident right before the crash took place. 

The collision remains under investigation.
