Ducks Skate By Pens 5-3

Marty McInnis scored twice and Fredrik Olausson extended his goal-scoring streak to five games, the longest by an NHL defenseman in four seasons, as the Anaheim Mighty Ducks beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-3 Monday night.

Tomas Sandstrom added a third-period goal and Teemu Selanne had three assists, helping the Ducks hand Pittsburgh its third loss in four games following a season-high six-game winning streak.

  • Guy Hebert, Anaheim's first pick in the 1993 expansion draft and the only player left from the Ducks' inaugural campaign, played his 300th game for them and made 44 saves. He stopped Pittsburgh's first 39 shots before German Titov deprived him of his 21st career shutout with 7:50 remaining.

Martin Straka, who set up the goal, then scored his 20th and 21st goals in a 1:34 span, cutting Anaheim's lead to a goal with 1:36 to play. But Paul Kariya clinched it for the Ducks with an empty-netter, his 18th goal.

Pittsburgh defenseman Kevin Hatcher played in his 1,000th NHL game and assisted on the Penguins' first two goals.

Olausson, who played 127 games for the Penguins during the previous two seasons before returning last August as a free agent to bolster the Ducks' power play, scored Anaheim's first goal of the game for the fifth time in a row and sixth time in the last seven contests.

The 13-year veteran positioned himself just outside the crease and redirected Selanne's pass from the base of the left circle past Tom Barrasso's stick at 12:44 of the opening period while former Anaheim defenseman Bobby Dollas was serving a hooking penalty.

Olausson's 10th goal -- six more than he had in 56 games during his first stint with the Ducks -- made him the first NHL defenseman to score in five straight games since Sergei Zubov's five-game strea with the New York Rangers in April 1995.

The Ducks, who capitalized three times during two-man advantages in a 6-4 home victory against Edmonton on Jan. 10, did it again at 2:46 of the second period after staggered penalties to rookie Maxim Galanov for interference and Darius Kasparaitis for cross-checking Travis Green into the boards behind the Pittsburgh net.

Olausson passed the puck from the right point to Kariya at the base of the circle, and Kariya found McInnis in front for a 2-0 lead. Anaheim is 30-for-114 on the power play in home games, the best mark in the NHL.

The Ducks scored their third goal on a two-on-one break less than five minutes into the third period, with Selanne setting up Sandstrom's 10-footer from the right circle. McInnis then converted a rebound of Matt Cullen's shot for his second goal of the night and 12th of the season.

Barrasso stopped 24 shots, including a breakaway by Kariya at 12:25 of the second period while the Ducks were shorthanded.
