(CBS News) Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, has begun stepping out solo for royal events, and now she's set to give her first public speech.

The former Kate Middleton will speak at the opening of The Treehouse, a hospice that services Suffolk and Essex, on March 19. The hospice is run by East Anglia's Children's Hospices (EACH), one of the organizations the duchess supports as patron.

In addition to providing a speech before planting a tree on the grounds, Kate will tour the facilities and meet the children and their families who receive care and support from the hospice service, as well as staff and supporters.

Kate's visit to The Treehouse marks her first public engagement as Royal Patron of EACH, a position that was announced in January.

"Having our work recognized in this way by Her Royal Highness is not only a tribute to our staff and supporters, but a huge boost for the children, young people and families receiving our care and support,"said Graham Butland, EACH Chief Executive in a statement.

Kate will have another first on St. Patrick's Day - her first solo military engagement, at which she will present shamrocks to 40 Officers and Warrant Officers, who will then issue them along the ranks of the Irish Guards, according to People.
