Dozens of students hurt when bus hit by truck overturns

BEAR, Del. State police say a bus overturned in a crash involving a tractor trailer at an intersection south of Wilmington.

CBS Philadelphia station KYW-TV reports the tractor trailer hit the bus, just after 10 p.m. Thursday.

In a news release, State Police Cpl. John Day says about 40 young adults, ages 18 to 22, were on the bus. KYW says all were college students.

Nine were taken to a hospital, and 30 more suffered bumps and bruises, the station says. None of the injuries appeared life-threatening, police say.

The Delaware News Journal quotes John Brennan, director of public relations at the University of Delaware, as saying the students were members of Phi Sigma Sigma Sorority and being transported to a party.

The newspaper says the women were in the second of two buses.

The bus driver wasn't hurt, the paper says, and neither was anyone in the other bus.

According to the paper, the bus driver "told emergency personnel at the scene he was turning ... when the back of the bus was hit by a northbound car carrier. The bus then spun around and overturned, he told authorities."
