Douglas: Divorce Deflates Dollars

When a reporter in Venice asked Michael Douglas how he invests his "mountain of money," the actor-producer replied, "My mountain of money has been very small this year, since I have become divorced."

He was married to Diandra Douglas for 20 years. They separated in 1995 and later divorced.

Douglas, in Italy for the Venice Film Festival, gave away $10,000 Tuesday to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, which wants to halve the number of hungry people in the world by 2015.

"I'm single and living in New York," he told The Calgary Sun last May. "It's great. I have the same apartment I've always had. I just bought the one next to it, knocked down some walls and made it twice as big."

He told the Sun that being single has made him "a bit irresponsible but also a bit reflectiveÂ… Sharing an apartment with my kid [Cameron] as a pair of swinging singles is not where I expected to be at 53."

Douglas added, "It's difficult for me to meet women, because my crowd is much older. I know that for some of the young women I do meet, a relationship with me can be envisioned as a benefit to their career. But what the heck, as long as we're having some fun."

His father, actor Kirk Douglas, is recovering from a stroke that affected his speech, and brother Eric struggles, sometimes publicly, with a substance-abuse problem.
